XLOOKUP Practice Exercises

XLOOKUP searches a range and returns a matching value from another range. It is more flexible than VLOOKUP because it can search in any direction.

What does XLOOKUP do?

The most common form is:

=XLOOKUP(lookup_value, lookup_array, return_array)

For example, to find an employee name from an employee ID:

=XLOOKUP(E2, Employees[ID], Employees[Name])

The Daily Sales MIS Report asks you to match employee IDs to an employee master table.

Why use XLOOKUP instead of VLOOKUP?

  • XLOOKUP can return values from columns to the left of the lookup column.
  • It returns a friendly value when no match is found.
  • The formula is shorter and easier to read.
